The statement; Don’t believe everyone
Breakfast being finished, and all the chores done, Blessed Gem sent her daughter to the market to buy some eggs. “Here’s the money, Uncertain One. Be gone with you now dearest.”
Uncertain One meandered into town, still deep in thought. Once she arrived in town, she ventured over to Brave and Sure Jewel’s shop. Although small, it was well kept up. Quaint.
“Greetings again, Sure Jewel! I’ve come to buy some eggs. I sure like your petite shop here in town.” “Well, thank you, Uncertain one.” Sure Jewel replied.
“But back to you, Uncertain One. I know just saw you only this morn, but what think you of our discussion?” “Ah, Sure Jewel. I know not what to think.” Uncertain one replied, her gaze falling. Whispering now; “I have not even MET Him. I mean, I don’t know, He’s very likeable. But yet, you KNOW He asks of me my whole LIFE, do you not?!” Sure Jewel smiled sadly.
Brave entered the conversation. He whispered also, gently saying; “Oh, Uncertain One. You indeed have much to learn. You marrying Him would indeed say you are willing to give your life to Him. But He would thus say the same thing by marrying you! Has not he already given up Himself? By this gesture of asking your hand in marriage, wanting to know you personally (Although He has always known all about you1), and everything else He is doing, He is showing you He’s already decided something. That He will give His all for you, forever. What do you say, Uncertain One?”
“Oh, uh, I-I’ll think about it. Thanks for the advice. I’ll take the eggs and be on my way, However. Thank-you and good-bye.”
The words of truth spoken by her wise friends shook her up, and began additional wheels turning in her already churning mind.
With mere moments to collect her thoughts as she strolled home-wards, Uncertain One passed an UN-apologetic, stuck-up one. Wishfully Above was an elderly woman, with a hunched back. She always wore a black shawl. No one quite understood the thin spectacle of life, but they knew one thing: she was a cunning soul, indeed. She was well known the town over.
In her loud, straight forward way, she began her spiel. “Greetings, Uncertain One! I bear tidings of JOY! I hear you are sending letters to some perfect lad you met, who lives quite far from here. Hu, most ladies of this town marry their own kind.” Uncertain One grimaced. “Yes, I know. And they live a lifeless life. They don’t usually show love, Wishfully Above! It seems to be torture, the way I look at it!”
Wishfully Above sighs. She continues her speech. “Yes, yes, yes. Well, let me continue, child. You know it is quite normal for one to love those who love them. Quite common, indeed, yes?” Uncertain One replies, saying, “Yes, there’s just not much love around here at all, though. That’s how it should be, nevertheless.”
“Oh, but Uncertain One, you should know it is simply not so with this gentleman, Pure that you know. Just so long as you strictly obey His every command to the tittle, He’ll welcome you to His beautiful home. Oh no, you don’t need to love Him one bit!”
Uncertain One was thinking during all this; Around here you don’t need to love any one. Only those who know Pure love anyone. Wishfully Above is WRONG! Love is good. And we don’t have it around here! I just don’t know how to give it, truly. Her parents and friends had shown her what true love for another is, but she was still learning how to extend it herself.
Uncertain One spoke. “But, but- I wouldn’t want our marriage to BE like everyone else’s around here! Don’t you understand? People’s marriages around here are dry- they’re lifeless!” Uncertain One tried to calm herself. “Forgive my hasty speech. How could this be, Wishfully Above?”
Even though she did not love Pure, she knew, deep inside, she should. And she wanted to.
“Ah, you are wrong, child. There are no buts about it. No questions to be asked. I am smart. I know. I have many years behind me, you know. Went to school, too, even though not many girls did when I was a young. No need to worry, you ARE fine as you are. No love needed, no guilt pleaded!” She chuckled. “Simply keep your obeying skills shiny, shiny, shiny, that’s all.”
Uncertain One groans silently and replies. “Wishfully Above, I thank you for your input, really, but I see your case! No need to draw it out further, please. I shall see you… another time.” She turned around abruptly, ready to get home.
Haughtily, wishfully Above exclaims: “Well! At your insistence I’ll go! But mind you, I’m smart. I know. Don’t get off track, young lady! Good-bye!!!”
Officially parting ways, Uncertain One faintly echoes “Good-bye”.
After helping Blessed Gem with the day’s washing and doing her daily chores, Uncertain One finally told her parents about her trip to the market. Her Father spoke gently, “Uncertain One, you must be careful on your journey to find love for Pure. Some people, if they do not know Him, don’t understand, and can’t really help you. Other persons are in your situation. They can encourage you, but not bring you closer to your goal. If, Uncertain One, you have a goal…” His gaze upon his daughter was kind and firm. And questioning.
“Oh Father! You are wise! But all I know is I want to get out of this mess! You are right, I don’t have a goal yet. I don’t know whether or not to serve and love Him. My heart says “Perhaps”. My mind says “How can I?”. I know I must weigh the balances!” Her mother says; “Yes, Uncertain One, Yes.” She so wanted to lift her daughter’s burden, but knew Uncertain One must work through her own confusion.
“It’s getting late my child. It is nigh eventide. Sweet dreams dear.”
“I shall try Mother; Father. But my mind races. I doubt my sleep will be very peaceful. I love you both.”
Uncertain One patted off to her room. Her parents glanced at each other. Strong Believer spoke. “She is a smart little lady. But she needs Wise King’s and Pure’s holy spirit to guide her. Let us kneel in prayer.” “Yes, my love.” Blesed Gem smiled slightly.
“Our kind, all-knowing Father, Wise King, we praise You for Your grace, and thank You for Your power. Thank You for this day and our daughter, Uncertain One. We now ask that you give Your spirit to our daughter, Uncertain One. She can not see her path alone. Deep-down, she knows what is right, but she knows not how to do right, Father. Let her meet Your Son one day, as we have. Let us all worship you in spirit and in truth. We await Your return. Give us faith during this time. Praise to you. HalleluYah.”
